Indoor rock climbing centres in Bristol
Indoor Climbing in Bristol
Most people when they think of Bristol
picture the Clifton suspension bridge spanning Britains second largest gorge. It is an iconic symbol of Bristol and attracts visitors from all around the world who marvel at its engineering or its views along Avon Gorge. What lies beneath the bridge is a limestone cliff just 5 minutes from the city centre that has some of the best climbing in Bristol
. As a consequence there is a vibrant climbing scene in Bristol and weather you are visiting for a weekend or have lived here for a number of years, this guide to indoor rock climbing in Bristol
outlines the climbing centres available and the facilities they offer.
When I first moved to Bristol there was only one climbing wall available (Undercover Rock) and on busy evenings you would have to cue outside while they incorporated a one in one out policy. Now Bristol boasts two climbing centres
that have both indoor rope climbing
and bouldering
and two centres specifically for bouldering
that are open to all. Those good old days of cueing are long gone but centres can still get busy and so avoiding peak times is advisable, its is cheaper too!
Before you rope climb you need to be proficient at climbing safely and belaying which will be put to the test before you are allowed to climb at all indoor climbing centres. Please don’t be put out by the request to demonstrate your belaying….. its for you and your climbing partners safety after all!
If you want to learn how to belay and climb safely so you can enjoy climbing at Bristols indoor climbing walls
why don’t you sign up for a coaching session

Undercover Rock
Undercover Rock (UCR) is Bristols original indoor rock climbing wall and is built in an old church in St Werbergs. It has 13 metre lead climbing walls with a variety of styles catered for such as slabs, overhangs, steep or technical. There is a large top roping area and a dedicated, albeit small, bouldering area and a newly opened area with more circuit boards. There is a cafe in the centre serving hot drinks, cake and more recently bacon butties and a seating area that overlooks the climbing. The climbing centre can be cold in the winter, it is in an old church after all, so don’t forget your insulated jacket!
UCR is now owned by The Training Academy (TCA) and offers a great monthly membership for both walls at a cost that will rival any other walls in the country.
Redpoint Bristol
In a refurbished art deco cinema in South Bristol you will find Redpoint climbing centre with lead climbing, top roping, auto belay (automatic belay device), bouldering and crazy climb (20+ climbing challenges directed mostly at young children). The wall is also home to a stalactite and a molten lava crack that is more of a gimmick than a training aid for crack climbing but is fun the first time you try it al the same. Redpoint does have a very nice cafe and bar with hot food being served until late and now is home to fitness rooms and a conference centre that are used for a variety of sessions such as yoga, suspension training, kettle ball and circuit training.
HOT OFF THE PRESS - Rumour has it that Redpoint are opening a new climbing centre in Bristol, just 2 minutes walk from Temple Meads Train Station at Freedog.
The Climbing Academy
Bouldering is all the fun of climbing without the equipment and so is easier and cheaper to get into. The Climbing Academy (TCA) set a new standard in climbing walls in Bristol when it opened. There are hundreds of problems set for all standards and an excellent competition wall that is seriously overhanging. The climbs (known as problems) are regularly re-set and there is a good inclusive vibe in the centre. As well as a cafe TCA has showers and treatment rooms where you can get those climbing niggles sorted with a qualified practitioner. You can find TCA off St Philips Causeway on Charlton Street.
Bloc
Bloc is the latest bouldering wall (for now) to be built in Bristol, just off the M32, it has learnt a lot from its competition. It has over 1200 metre squared of indoor climbing so it is the largest of the Bristol walls and it feels spacious even when its busy...... which it is. It also has some of the highest problems in Bristol which can be a bit daunting to the uninitiated. Bloc is home to clip and climb (climbing based activities) for children which proves popular especially for parties and a cafe serving hot and cold drinks, cake and alcohol to those that are not climbing...... or have finished climbing for the day. There is also a well stocked climbing shop ( Banana Finger's) that has a great choice of climbing shoes.
