Another great day in the mountains looking in detail at the best lines going over the Moelwyns for the Paddy Buckley round. It’s the meatiest leg of the round and energy sapping with all the bogs but that’s half the fun. The leg is 36km it’s 2,600m of height gain that takes around 7 hours. It’s the leg where you can make or loose a lot of time and so is a must to know well. Back to back training for returning runner @colinfromaccounts putting in a solid two days running in preparation for the @ultratrailsnowdonia. Doing two big days back to back is great training for big ultra’s as it gets you used to running while tired and let’s be honest on a 100km run your going to be tired for a good chunk of it. What’s great about running is the time you get to spend with people and interesting facts you find out. Colin’s uncle, Neil Cusack is the only Irish man to have won the Boston marathon back in 1974 with a staggering time of 2hrs 13mins and 39sec! (See last photo taken from Boston newspaper). Feel very fortunate to have been able to spend a good chunk of time in the mountains this winter. Getting to explore an area on a split board bagging sunmits and riding some great lines. After a night in a hut and a long skin along a beautiful ridge line it was great to get to the top of another summit yesterday. Standing on the top of the Grand Pinier (3117m) enjoying the panoramic views my mind wanders and checks out more lines and more peaks that I’d like to explore. I’m a big fan of going deep into the mountains and making the most of the hut network here in France. A long skin into the refuge over very “Scottish” skiing terrain with patches of snow interspersed with rocks mud and grass. The 12km skin was worth it for the most amazing views of Mount Visio, the suns rays hitting the mountain at sunset producing a beautiful Alpen glow, the phenomenal mountain silence and so many stars! After a night in the hut we toured up to the Col de Soustres at 3052m and enjoyed a descent that was worth the hard work. One of those great days in the mountains when everything aligns. Skinning up first thing in the morning with the cloud shrouding the tops it was obvious that the day could go two ways. Higher we ascended and the visibility deteriorated, a quick discussion about options and a transition to boot packing up the couloir to access the ridge. Further we went, higher we got and at last glimpses of blue started to show through the clouds as we neared the ridge of our objective, the Pic Beal traversier. There are moments in the mountains when you have to just stop and savour the moment. Coming out the top of the couloir to the most amazing cloud inversion was so so special and a bit of a relief! Ice climbing is something I’ve always wanted to be good at but never spent enough time doing. It’s been fun swinging axes and placing screws on the frozen water in La Grave but sticking to the classic lines comes with its problems. While leading one of the pitches I took a head shot of a large chunk of ice from climbers above. Thankfully the helmet took all the impact but is definitely in need of replacement. Time to sharpen those picks (in my case buy some ice specific not mixed ones), don’t leave late thinking everyone will get out early and find some of the less travelled routes! Touring adventure up to the Pic Blanc du Galibier on a particularly windy day. The winds have shifted a lot of snow, scouring some of the northern slopes and dumping it on the Southern ones. Even on this easy angled tour a small slab was triggered that propagated for 20m and slid down the face. Be safe, be avalanche aware! Ascending up to ski the north couloir of Roche Gautier with the morning sun catching the summits with the wind whipping off the tops made the mountains feel bigger than they were. Roche Gautier is at an altitude of 2,640m and the 1,100m skin up was worth it for the fresh tracks. You gotta earn your turns in the backcountry! Touring touring touring. Not quite sure why I’ve bought a lift pass as spending most of the time “earning my turns” in the back country. Big social team day out yesterday up to the Col d’Izoard, lunch looking into Italy before few of us heading up l’Arpelin. On a tour up the Col de Maison Chaude a line down the SE face of L’Arpelin was screaming to be rode and it was nice to see it hadn’t been done still. Slightly icy at the top for the first few turns but as it opened up there was some lovely powder to be had. First few days in the Alps for 2025 and lucky to have two powder days to kickstart the season, with varying results. The first day we went up the popular Pojnte de Chalune and got first tracks in one of the couloirs coming off its Southern ridgeline. Second day we attempted to board the North couloir on Mont Brion but took the right decision to head down 300m vertical from the summit. Just as we made that decision a sizeable avalanche came down the couloir that luckily we were no longer in! You often hear of people talking about intuition in the mountains and it was good to have an early indication that it’s ok and right to listen to yours and other people’s intuition. If it doesn’t feel right then it’s ok to turn around and go home. Guiding the Moelwyns leg of the Paddy Buckley on a wet and wild windy day for the @thelonedistancerunner. A Bob Graham completer (in under 24 hours) she has big plans for 2025 with entry confirmed for the dragons back race and looking at attempting the Paddy Buckley. The Moelwyns are always boggy but very runnable and a great leg to do in its own right. The conditions were hard at times but training runs at the Moelwyns worst will make the leg in good conditions a dream! The @ultratrailsnowdonia is a race that see’s high attrition rates, in 2024, the 100 mile race saw over 66% of people pull out. Running in Snowdonia is often underestimated with lots of ups and technical terrain that reduces even the best runners pace. Today I was guiding @2oak on part of the UTS 100km. Only 4 weeks to go until the @dragonsbackrace, a multi day race that weaves itself through Wales. The first day starts in Conwy and traverses the mountains of the Carneddau, Glyderau and finally the Snowdon range culminating in a traverse over the infamous Crob Goch. Am Buchaille - one of the trilogy of sea stacks that oozes adventure! The stack itself is just 65m high but climbing the stack is just half of it! It starts with a beautiful walk to Sandwood Bay one of the UK’s finest beaches, a sea swim across the tidal channel in rough waters before a 3 pitch E1 route on amazing sandstone. High fives at the top, abseil and reverse. In the few weeks I was working there we had hail and snow on the summits, 60mph winds, driving rain but no midges!! Our original plan with James and John had been to do the Cuillin Ridge but it was certainly not the weather for it. With strong South Westerly winds it made sense to climb pinnacle ridge, a belter of a ridge heading towards Sgurr nan Gillean. We also took in Am Basteir bagging another munroe for the tickers. We did get onto the ridge and tick off the Inn Pin, the hardest munroe, and another 2 munroes to make the most of our time. Not many views as the pictures show! Mistakes and problems occur in the mountains when you are not adaptable, it’s important to study the weather and change your plans accordingly. What a day! 11 runners took their first strides towards the summit of Yr Wydffa (Snowdon) at 6am to start on the amazing Welsh 3000’s. 15 peaks, 53km, 3,700m of height gain and 15hrs later the team was off the mountain enjoying beers and medals. It was a hot start to the day and every runner did so well to battle through the heat and to push through the lows and ride the highs. It’s still one of my favourite events to organise and great to get the chance to run the whole thing looking after a strong running team. Here’s to all the hero’s who completed the @ultratrailsnowdonia (UTS) race at the weekend in tough, hot conditions! I was working as mountain safety and got to see the last runners go through. Congratulations to Mark Darbyshire and Rachel Fawcett for winning the respective male and female 100 Mile UTS. The more impressive feat for me is the finishers at the back, here we have Charlotte Fisher and Nicholas Mead finishing the 100 mile race in over 47 hours The 100 mile race saw an attrition rate of 66%, the heat definately had a role to play in this and there will always be injuries or bad days in the hills but a lot of people get caught out by the technical nature of the terrain in Eryri (Snowdonia). Many runners sign up for races in North Wales such as the @ultratrailsnowdonia or the @dragonsbackrace without having run in them first. Running in North Wales is technical and often underestimated. Confidence on this terrain comes from exposure and time building the skills to navigate the tricky descents that can end up being as slow as the ups for some runners. This weekend we were out with runners that are signed up for the dragons back, working on their footwork and use of poles, talking strategies, getting time on terrain specific for the race and building confidence especially over Crib Goch. Out exploring the mountain trails around Conwy taking in the great bridleway that weaves its way along the coast on the Carneddau. The Carneddau are the largest continuous stretch of mountain land over 2,500 feet in the country and home to the Carneddau ponies. Short trips with friends always come with a host of heuristic traps that are easily fallen into. - Acceptance: not wanting to stand out from the crowd and going along with something just because everyone else is doing it. - Scarcity: lack of snow this year in the alps and only a few days to make the most of it. - Commitment: once you’ve been skinning up for most of the day but you start running low on time but still haven’t reached the couloir you wanted to drop into. If you’ve never heard of heuristic traps and you ride backcountry / off-piste YOU SHOULD! There are many more of these traps that are easy to fall into with dire consequences, having knowledge of them stops you falling into them. In the past I’ve racked up so many in a single day it is only luck that I’m still riding. Day out on the Argentiere Glacier touring the Col du Chardonet which is the start to the famous Haute Route. Super warm in the sun and a total of 1,000m of height gain which felt tougher than normal with the temperatures. Glad to reach the col, transition and start the journey back down to the valley floor. First bit of good height gain in a while running up to the summit of the Pic de la Corne in Morzine. The summit itself is at 2000m and it’s scary to see how little snow there is below this, is this the new norm for ski resorts in the alps? With the recent news of the world’s first year breaching the 1.5 degree warming limit it’s certainly not looking good! After a couple of months where priorities changed that kept me away from running, its back to business with training starting in earnest. Was a breath of fresh air to be hitting the trails today getting back into the flow of trails beneath my feet! The 25 bosses run is a beaut with rock hopping, rock crevasse jumping, slots to squeeze in, twists, turns and some beautiful scenery on sandy trails. There is something magical about snow being on my home mountains, made special with the winter light, low in the sky bringing out all the shades and shadows the mountains hold. It’s been a while since I’ve raced an ultra and it showed yesterday on the 38 mile Pen Llyn ultra. The first 20 miles I was running well and then the heavy legs kicked in and I wasn’t able to maintain my speed as I would of liked. Definitely had to dig deep but the experience was worth if, for the sunrise on the beach as we ran down the coast if nothing else! Finished the race in just under 7 hours in 22nd place. Much work to be done next year! Doing your first lead climb is no small feat, there are skills to learn like clipping correctly, cleaning the route as well as rope management, you have to climb with confidence while maintaining steady breathing and a state of relaxation to prevent you wasting energy while climbing, you need to choose a route carefully that is well within your grade and all this while staying engaged so you can read and climb the route in front of you. @tianniely had a day with Adventure Awaits and smashed it confidently climbing her first lead, not first outdoor lead but first lead! First running race in a number of years and what an absolute belter. The Ras Pedol Peris organised by @eryri.harriers covers some technical ground with plenty of summits in Snowdonia (28km, 2600m height gain). So good to be pushing my body in a way that you only do while racing and happy with a time of 4hrs 25mins and 23rd place overall. For me though races are great at bringing runners together, although you are technically ‘racing’ against each other, there are always good chats and support along the way. No So good to be back! The simplicity of running from the valley floor to a mountain summit on your own steam fills me with immense joy. Today I got to indulge myself and do a route I have long wanted to do. The Dents du midi is a spectacular range of 7 mountains that commands the skyline from Champery and Martigney in Switzerland, with summit names such as the Cathedral and the Fortress that give you an impression of the spectacular geology. I had the pleasure of running up with Tom from @alpsadventures.ch and Greg, two runners training for the upcoming trail du Dents du Midi making light work of the 2000m of height gain up to the Haute Cime at 3,257m with a total of 22km for the whole route. The south ridge of Dent Blanche (4,357m) with spectacular views of the Matterhorn was a great route for so many reasons. As you drive up to the sleepy village of Val d’Heren the solitary mountain is ever present on the skyline screaming to be climbed. After a long walk in (10km with 1,700m height gain) we bivvyed just off the glacier ready for an early start and enjoyed a night under the stars. Before the sun rose we set off tackling easy rock sections and glacial passage before the fun really started. We took the ridge direct to enjoy the climbing on the Grandes Gendarmes which had great rock and exposed climbing (IV) just after sunrise. This was followed by more interesting ridge climbing (III) with breathtaking views throughout all the way to the snowy summit. Nice to have a few days trad climbing in the Aguille Rouge picking routes that get less sun. “Don’t cry for me Argentina” is a belter of a route that is a striking line across the face. Long days in the high mountains make me feel alive, being face to face with nature and at her mercy knowing that it’s you against the elements and you that has to get yourself (and your partner) down safely. Being tied onto a rope with someone else is always a risk as you are trusting the other person not to make any mistakes just as you yourself can’t but it’s also where friendships are made with shared experiences of a combined goal. I was never bothered about climbing Mont Blanc on its own but as part of the royal traverse it felt right. What a few days traversing the mountains from les Contamines to Chamonix along the Royal Traverse. I’ve never been much bothered about summits but love the journey or the line a route takes. When I first saw this route in @lukedavies_outdoors revised @rockfax chamonix guide I was totally in awe and it’s great to have been able to get a weather window to make an attempt. 30km and just under 5,000m of height gain along the Dome du Mirage, Aguille du Bionassy, Dome du Goûter and Mont Blanc. The last day saw a solid 15 hour push starting at 3am covering technical climbing at altitude along the Bionassy ridge, summiting Europe’s highest mountain and a descent down Le trois monts route where you just couldn’t switch off. Always special walking out of the Aguille du Midi through the snow tunnel and onto the exposed ridge to get you onto the Mer de Glace. An amazing mountain view and a heart thumping initial descent with a drop down the side to Chamonix, albeit if you fell I think you would end up at the Aguille du Plan but still a long drop! Making the most of a break in the bad weather with a quick run to the Refuge Albert at a height 2,720m. Would of been good to get higher to help with acclimatisation but it’s always worth watching the weather and making decisions based on it. Sideways wind at 50mph and driving rain that stung your legs was the call of the day for returning client Russ this week. The aim was to get some experience of scrambling or sky running as it is termed when combined with running. Even with the horrible conditions we got to take in a classic grade 1 scramble tucked away from wet conditions and ran 12 miles with 1,200m height gain. The Cuillin Ridge on the Isle of Skye - a 12km ridge on every mountaineers tick list. Sections of climbing, captivating scrambling, 4,000m of height gain, an overnight bivy, abseils and so much more. It’s a route where you can’t switch off so the mental strain in addition to the physical strain makes for a tough two days. My team of 4 did amazingly well, putting in a massive amount of effort and not giving up. The Paddy Buckley round, a gruelling 61 mile route with 8,500m of height gain going over 47 tops. Yesterday I had the pleasure of getting out with @townendgeorgia as she attempted the full round. We started in Capel Curig and ran for 8 hours over 16 tops in the unrelenting sun before Georgie decided that it wasn’t going to happen this time. It’s the hardest of the three “big rounds” and getting to the position of being able to make an attempt is no small undertaking in itself. Recce’s, long runs, hill training, logistic organisation, more hill training and then some more! Everything needs to align on the day, the weather, your body and the support you’ve organised. Unfortunately everything didn’t line up this time but still a fantastic day in the mountains and great learning for the next time! Running with international athlete Vanessa Wong visiting from Hong Kong doing a recce of the Ultra Trail Snowdonia, a beautifully brutal ultra in the depths of the National Park in Wales. It has some serious height gain and a lot of technical running. Recce’s are essential in my mind for a successful race - the psychological advantage of knowing every twist and turn, each up and the technical downs will give Vanessa a good shot on the 13th May. Last month I was made a full member of Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team after a year of training and getting to grips with local rescues. It's a huge honour to be part of a good group of local individuals, from all walks of life, who voluntarily go out in all conditions to help those in distress regardless of the cause. Mountain Rescue team members are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and funded entirely by donations by the public to carry out essential life-saving rescue service.
