Scrambling is a progression of hill walking where it is necessary to use your hands to climb across ridges, up gullies and up through buttress' of mountains. It's possible to start scrambling without a rope on easier ground however the harder scrambles involve sections of rock climbing where a rope and the skills to be able to use it are required.
